Never Forget the Roots: Documenting Heritage in the Language of the Modern Era

The Jeonju Ryu Clan Digital Archive (jjryuarchive) is an open-source digital archive project established to systematically catalog, visualize, and permanently preserve the history, ancestral genealogy, submerged village records, and UNESCO Memory of the World heritage of the Sugok Branch of the Jeonju Ryu Clan.

It bridges centuries of traditional clan genealogies with modern web architecture, empowering descendants and historians to explore and safeguard their familial roots across generational boundaries.

Project Motivation — Overcoming Submersion and Securing Permanent Preservation

The historical home of the Sugok Branch—the centuries-old Musil Village in Andong—was entirely submerged in 1974 due to the construction of the Andong Dam. The geographical epicenter of the clan, its physical residences, and its cultural continuity were abruptly severed, leaving future generations with fragmented access to their lineage.

"If our records remain purely paper-based, what happens to our heritage during times of historical upheaval or national crisis?"

This concern catalyzed an obligation: a minimum duty to record and safeguard ancestral identity. By constructing an open static web archive anchored to global distributed vaults like GitHub, this project ensures that clan heritage remains permanently accessible and immutable.

Key Features & Architecture

1. Interactive Ancestral Lineage Visualizer (/genealogy)

  • Verified Genealogic Data Modeling: Mapped 71 prominent ancestors spanning 21 generations, from Founder Ryu Seup (Wansan Buwongun) to independence activist Ryu Dong-si.
  • Historical Era Flow & Grid Views: Six temporal era groupings encompassing the Goryeo-Joseon transition, factional struggles, the Imjin War, the golden age of Neo-Confucian ritual studies, and anti-colonial resistance.
  • Real-Time Multidimensional Filtering: Instant search across ancestral names, pen names, titles, official government posts, and clan sub-branches.
  • Jokbo ID Linkage: Direct metadata linkages to original volume/page references within the official Jeonju Ryu Clan Daedongbo records.

2. Ancestor Memorials & Biography Catalog (/people)

  • Profiles of renowned figures: Righteous Army commander Ryu Bok-gi, Inspector General Ryu Jeong-won, master ritualist Ryu Jang-won, prominent philosopher Ryu Chi-myeong, and three generations of independence patriots (Ryu Pil-yeong, Ryu Won-sik, Ryu Dong-si).
  • Searchable categorizations across civil officials, scholars, military leaders, and resistance fighters.

3. Digital Repository & Submerged Heritage (/archive)

  • High-fidelity records of UNESCO-inscribed Confucian printing woodblocks (including Samsan-jip and Sangbyeon-tonggo).
  • Archival photography of Musil Village prior to the 1974 dam flooding, alongside architectural blueprints of relocated historic head houses.

4. Heritage Aesthetics via Asharyu Design System

  • Modern visual palette reflecting traditional Hanji paper textures and ink-wash gradients through asharyu-design-token.
  • Mobile-first responsive layouts engineered with Next.js 16 and Tailwind CSS 4.

Technical Decisions

  • Next.js 16 (App Router): Deployed with static export paradigms to guarantee ultra-fast, zero-server-cost delivery.
  • React 19 & TypeScript: Strict type schemas enforcing clean parent-child relationships and complex genealogical graphs.
  • Tailwind CSS 4: High-performance CSS engine delivering seamless responsiveness without runtime styling overhead.
  • asharyu-design-token: Incorporating oriental philosophical aesthetics into modular web components.
